I can’t access the Network Solutions Whois database. * WELCOME to the VeriSign Global Registry Service Whois Server. * * Sorry, the Whois database is currently down. * * Please wait a while and try again. Thanks I needed to use it to confirm the registration dates for one of my domains hasn’t passed. I […]

Chinese spiders/robots downloading mp3 files?

While running the web traffic stats for some of my podcast sites, I noticed that a bunch of my MP3 files have been downloaded a bunch of times from the same IP address. And then two seconds later, it is downloaded again. Luckily the second time apache reports a 206 (file unchanged) error. The IP […]

O’Reilly Safari Signup Process Turning People Off

I googled a question about Photoshop, and one of the first page results was found in a book available in O’Reilly’s Safari service. The safari service gives you access to O’Reilly books online. Your Name on Toast

Tripwire has moved to Eloqua for their spam/newsletter

In July 2005, I finally added tailorednews.com to my site’s blacklist, because Tripwire.com would not honor my opt-out requests. I guess those bounces go nowhere, because I just got the Tripwire newsletter from en25.com, run by eloqua.com. Blocks have been updated.

The New Battlestar Galactica

One of my friends (hey Brad!) asked me a while ago if I had seen the Battlestar Galactica. We don’t have cable TV, so no I haven’t. But I just watched the first two seasons in 43 minutes. I downloaded Battlestar Galactica: The Story So Far into iTunes. It’s a 465MB file, but it looks […]

Contest Entry

Futurosity is doing something I have often thought of doing, giving away a cool prize in exchange for a link. What should I give away? hmmm….

Plaxo spam greeting cards

Plaxo.com, the contact management people, have an option in their privacy policy that you can opt-out of having their members send you invites or reminders. I did that back in September 2004, and haven’t received any other Plaxo garbage since then. Now Plaxo has an e-greeting card system. Which apparently Plaxo.com feels does not have […]
